What You Need to Know

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative designed to encourage homeowners to replace old, inefficient fossil fuel boilers with more energy-efficient, low-carbon heating systems. The scheme aims to support the UK's transition to greener energy sources, reduce carbon emissions, and help meet its Net Zero 2050 target.

Key Features of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

  • Purpose: To assist in the decarbonisation of homes and small businesses by providing financial incentives to install low-carbon heating systems.

  • Target Audience: Homeowners, landlords, and small non-domestic property owners across England and Wales.

  • Timeframe: The scheme started in May 2022 and is set to run until 2028.

  • Funding: A total of £450 million is allocated to the scheme, offering grants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Eligibility Criteria

To benefit from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, homeowners must meet the following conditions:

  • Property Type: The scheme applies to domestic and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales.

  • Heating System: The scheme is designed for existing properties replacing fossil fuel boilers, such as gas, oil, or electric heating systems.

  • Age of Property: New-build properties are not eligible unless they are self-build homes.

  • Energy Efficiency: Your property should meet basic energy efficiency standards. For example, your home must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation, as these are prerequisites to improve energy efficiency.

Why Consider the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is part of the UK's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and help homeowners transition to sustainable heating systems. Here are some reasons to consider taking part:

  • Environmental Benefits: Installing a heat pump or biomass boiler significantly lowers your home’s carbon footprint by using renewable energy sources.

  • Cost Savings: While the installation of these systems can be expensive upfront, the grant provides substantial financial support, and you’ll likely see savings on energy bills over time.

  • Future-Proofing: The UK government is considering banning the installation of new gas boilers in homes from 2035. Switching to a low-carbon heating system now could protect you from future regulations.
